About the Awardees
Alexander Polinskiy
Recipient of The 2026 NowBeat Commission
I was born in 2008 in Hamburg, Germany. From early childhood, I showed great interest as well as love for music and began playing the violin and piano. Since the age of four, I have regularly participated in various concerts, competitions, and festivals. At the age of seven, I performed for the first time in the Laeiszhalle, one of Hamburg's main concert halls, as a prizewinner of the Hamburg Instrumental Competition.
At eleven, I began composition lessons with Leon Gurvitch and in 2022 became a junior student at the Berlin University of the Arts in the subject of composition, studying with Tom Rojo Poller. Currently, I'm receiving violin instruction from Hovhannes Bagdasaryan and piano lessons from Elena Sukmanova.
I'm a multiple recipient of federal prizes in the German Federal Competition of Young Musicians — for performances of my compositions in connection with multimedia concepts. In the German Federal Competition of Young Composers, I received the prestigious national prize twice.
"The Secret", my first orchestral work, was premiered in May 2025 by the Harz Symphony Orchestra as part of the Orchestral Workshop in Halberstadt. The event was a great success: I was rewarded for his work with a commission from the Harz Symphony Orchestra, a repeat performance of "The Secret", and an invitation to the IMPULS Festival. In the same year, I participated in the NowBeat Project for which I composed the “Ode to the German postal service". The project was an important milestone in my artistic development.
Vikram Goudar
Honorable Mention
When I was 6, I asked my piano teacher why we played music by Bach and Beethoven instead of music we had written ourselves. He didn't really have a good answer, so I started writing music that day. Since then, I have written pieces for piano solo, chamber ensemble/piano trio, string and symphony orchestra, as well as electronic instruments. I enjoy learning about and writing with motifs and scales from around the world, especially the pentatonic and hexatonic scales of South and Southeast Asia.
A couple of interesting facts about me:
I maintain that the most difficult part of the composition process, by far, is choosing a title. It is nearly always the last thing I do when writing a piece.
Despite my piano teacher’s attempts to convert me, I am vehemently team MuseScore.
Every time I sit down at the piano, I open Voice Memos on my phone because I have lost far too many compositional motifs; I’m now at “New Recording 1151.”
My favorite pentatonic is, among other names, called Degung Da-Mi-Na-Ti-La, used to tune Indonesian zithers and metallophones. It most closely matches G-B-C-D-F# and associated transpositions. It’s also known as Ragam Jaganmohini in South Indian classical music.
It’s my dream to start a collection of world musical instruments.
Caden Ho
Honorable Mention
Hi, my name is Caden. I’m 17 and I am from Dallas, Texas. I am a composer whose music centers on one goal; using music to elicit introspection. My earliest experiences with music came from attending Buddhist services, where chanting and traditional percussion instruments created a quiet space for reflection. Over time, I recognized that all types of music, not only prayer, helped me focus inward and better understand my thoughts and emotions.
In eighth grade, I became deeply interested in classical music and began composing with the hope of offering others the same reflective experience. I started with small ideas, writing short melodies online, and later started formal composition lessons in my sophomore year. My first teacher encouraged me to “find my voice,” which led me to explore a wide range of genres, including contemporary classical, film music, pop, jazz, and R&B. This broad listening continues to shape my approach to composing.
Currently, I am studying privately with Dr. Daniel Felsenfeld and continue to refine my voice. When I write, I usually prefer to portray a single idea or image rather than follow a rigid chronology, allowing listeners to create their own meanings. I am less concerned with genre or personal preference than with whether a piece can resonate with its audience and evoke self-reflection.
I view composition as a way to support personal growth and emotional awareness. I hope to continue developing my voice and to create music that helps others pause, reflect, and better understand themselves.
